Balloons: The Transparency Trick

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share today’s card-making trick. It’s a balloon-themed tutorial, and you won’t believe how easy it is.

The supplies I used are linked at the bottom of this post
A cute green turtle character wearing a party hat, holding three balloons, with a 'Happy Birthday' message on a card featuring a scalloped green border.

To start, I cut a window out of a 4″ x 5-1/4 piece of cardstock.

A white cardstock with a scalloped rectangular cutout and a scalloped cutting die placed beside it on a grid-patterned surface.

Next, I placed the panel on a sheet of green cardstock and lightly traced the opening with a pencil. I then used a ruler to draw a border just inside that rectangle, sketched some grass along the bottom, and cut it all out with an X-Acto knife.

I colored the black on my card base using some distress oxide, being sure to not get too close to the edges.

With the background done, I stamped the sentiment onto my main card panel. On a separate piece of 100# cardstock, I stamped the turtles and balloons. Pro-tip: Be sure to use an ink that won’t smear with alcohol markers—Memento is my personal favorite!

After fussy cutting the pieces, I started playing with the layout until it felt just right, then taped / glued everything down except for the balloons.

Here’s the secret to getting that transparent look… color the balloons with a slightly lighter version of whatever background color they’re overlapping. I used alcohol markers, a little colored pencil, and a white paint marker for the highlights. The way the gray and green look on the white cardstock tricks your brain into seeing them as transparent.

And can you guess what I used for the balloon strings? Dental floss!

What do you think? Did I pull it off? Let me know if you’re going to try this on one of your projects! I had so much fun with this one and hope you enjoyed the tip!

I’m dying to know—will you try this technique? Tag me if you do!

See you again soon with more inspiration!

Just over here trying to spread a little sunshine one card at a time. I'm fueled by Dr. Pepper, sarcasm and especially puns. I hope my cards bring others even a portion of the joy that I feel creating them. #cre8yoursunshine☀️
