Between a Rock and a Card Place

This week’s Freshly Made Sketches layout was a real thinker for me. I had so many ideas bouncing around at once, it made it hard to choose just one.

I settled on a stone theme and planned to cut and layer little squares for dimension, but after a lot of happy experimenting I ran short on time. I swapped the scissors for a pen, drew the stones by hand, and kept the card to one layer. Sometimes the simplest version ends up feeling the most solid.

Here are the details and the supplies are linked at the bottom of the post…
  • I stamped the sentiment and used a square stencil to created the pattern using Lost Shadow Distress Oxide.
  • I added some Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide randomly over the Lost Shadow.
  • Using a Tombow MONO Drawing Pen, I loosely traced the squares and added random lines and cracks.
  • Using a grey Olo marker, I added shadows above the cracks, the right sides of the squares and the bottoms.
  • Highlights were created with a white Gelly Roll pen. I added them on the top left corner of the squares and under each of the crack lines.
  • The next step was my favorite and really added that finishing touch I was looking for. I wanted to make it appear as though one of the stones had been removed. I used a Posca white marker and a light Grey Olo marker and roughed up the surface around the sentiment.

I hope I pulled it off and that is how it comes across. Thanks for following along!

Rock on, craft on, see you soon.

Just over here trying to spread a little sunshine one card at a time. I'm fueled by Dr. Pepper, sarcasm and especially puns. I hope my cards bring others even a portion of the joy that I feel creating them. #cre8yoursunshine☀️

  1. I have been waiting since seeing your card on the DT blog to find out what stamps you used for the rocks and you drew them yourself! Amazing card!
